The following rant is probably not the best to publish, considering the fact that I am a blog owner and will address the exaggerated obsession with screens. Screens meaning any particular electronic device with access to the ever so chaotic social networking world. A more modern definition of what people are consumed with these days, is constantly updating their life for others to approve or not. People stress more over things said on the internet than in their actual lives, which is actually quite sickening.
Don’t get me wrong, the general technology advancements over the past decade has had its positive aspects. I am now friends with my entire school, almost my whole family, and some animals were even accepted… I absolutely cherish all of the long lost friends that I have found with the help of a search bar, as well as being able to miraculously remember any upcoming birthdays. These advancements however, make me wonder what affect it has had on the process of stalking.
Social media is another debate that has has a major impact on our lives. I speak for myself and so many others saying that as soon as I wake up, out of habit, I reach for my phone and catch up on the less than one hundred and forty character updates that happened overnight on Twitter. Some visit Facebook or Tumblr or Yahoo. All of these sites keep us updated throughout the day on our peers’ life and even celebrity lives. With the availability of smart phone apps and hand held devices welcoming wireless internet, anyone can confirm the most updated piece of news within seconds. As I am opposed to the frequent restoration of my Facebook friends’ lives, any genre of news usually holds information worth reading during my crazy school day.
I sometimes wonder what it would be like to live thirty years ago, when two friends would have to walk to each others house in order to discuss the he said, she said gossip. There wasn’t any hidden messages, or additional ways to act fake or bully another person. Most actions were face to face and live. Mind you, all of this is coming from a seventeen-yea-old’s thoughts and this discussion could easily be swayed by a more mature and wiser opinion. But as far as my own opinion goes, my generation is corrupt. We believe any search result from Google from by asking ‘How can I lose weight?’ to ‘Where are my keys?’. I’m not sure if society has found a lack of knowledge or has just stopped caring.
