This weekend I decided to be a college student and attend some events on campus. A blues and funk concert and then a poetry reading. Both support expressive art and sparked some goose bumps.

The band on Friday was good and the female singer had an amazing voice, I like to appreciate some live music once and a while. The reggae contribution on Bob Marley’s birthday was another nice touch.

On Saturday we listened to Kyla Lacey and she was phenomenal. I was hoping she gave lessons on being a professional speaker because I was taking notes. She even complimented the students who spoke saying that they were better than some professional poets she knows.

Both performances were wonderful examples of writing and I enjoyed them equally. However, my house mate felt differently. During both performances, the lead female took roughly 5 minutes to announce their Instagram handle and took a photo with the crowd. BOTH ENTERTAINERS. Two nights in a row we witnessed the new generation of fame.

The one female even said how that’s how people get noticed nowadays, by how many followers someone has on Twitter, not by talent or hard work.

I commend both for performing and having guts, but where is the traditional morals and the 5 minutes that could have been used for jokes or a melody or a confession.

I guess there’s nothing to say about the industry because the big wigs will do anything for money, so in the world of the singer who loves what she does everyday, kissing butt is the road to go.

Is a performer lying to themselves by chasing the dream when their still really chasing money? You can’t force talent, but you can force fame.

Maybe that’s just the Grammy’s.

Enjoy.
